I have the same feeling about all of this. I personally don't write RPS for this reason; I'm scared to NOT give justice to the actors that I've come to love and admire. Just like you.
I think they are pretty rare the authors that can write good RPS fics because those few managed to find good grounds and good characterization of the people. And yes, I think speculation is a plus.
But I think what makes those people (half of the time) write about some couples is because of the character they did; I mean, there's a lot of ZukkiAdachi, ShirotaAiba, SaiRui... I could list a few. It's not hard to say that they aren't their characters, but some people don't see that.
